History
Sven Wingqvist, when a thirty-year-old factory engineer in charge of repair and maintenance at Gamlestadens Fabriker, was not satisfied with the performance of the ball bearings used. These are rigid ball bearings, imported from Germany, and if the long shaft on the machine at the least paralleled textile mills, the ball bearing will become too hot and damaged, bringing production to a costly stoppage. In the spring of 1907, Wingquist presented a breakthrough - a double-striped, self-aligned ball bearing with a raceway ball in an outer ring, divided by both rows of balls. This allows the inner ring to adjust freely in relation to the outer ring, without negatively impacting the bearing function. The new bearings solve the problems associated with the misalignment of the shaft and thus not so often stop production. Self-alignment is particularly useful in less-than-perfect machines from time and in buildings with the problem of decline, which occurs in the Gamlestadens Fabriker, since the many lands where Gothenburg has been built are clay.
On February 16, 1907, Sven Wingqvist applied for the Swedish patent No. 25406, a self-aligning, multi-line radial ball bearing. The patent granted on June 6 in Sweden coincides with patents in 10 other countries. New ball bearings are successful from the start. Three years after the SKF was established, the company has 325 employees and one subsidiary in the UK. Manufacturing operations were then established in several countries.
In 1912, SKF was represented in 32 countries and by 1930, more than 21,000 staff were employed in 12 manufacturing facilities worldwide with the largest in Philadelphia, USA.
SKF started its operations in India in 1923 by establishing a trading post in Calcutta. Early operations include importing automotive bearings. SKF India Ltd. was established in 1961 after collaboration between AB SKF, Associated Bearing Co. Ltd. and Investment Corp. of India Ltd. In 1963, SKF set up its first bearing factory in Pune, Maharashtra.
Assar Gabrielsson, SKF sales manager and Bj̮'̦rn Prytz, SKF Managing Director was founder of Volvo AB in 1926. Initially, the company served as a car subsidiary in the SKF group. SKF funded the production of the first thousand cars, built at Hisingen in Gothenburg, beginning in 1927. SKF uses one of the company's trademark names: AB Volvo, derived from the Latin "I roll", with its clear connotation of the pads in motion. Volvo's ownership lasted until 1935 when the last stake was divested.
In the 1970s, SKF began a massive production rationalization program in Europe. A visionary project, "Production Concept for the 80s" was launched with the aim of running a practical, unmanned night shift. To improve productivity and maintain product quality, it takes a series of automatic bearing rings, so SKF develops Flexlink brand. FlexLink created a multifectal plastic chain conveyor system to break business requirements. SKF released FlexLink as a separate company in 1997.
