History
Ross Siragusa founded Continental Radio and Television Corp. as a consumer electronics maker (radio and phonograph) in Chicago during 1934. It later became Admiral Corp. Annual sales are about $ 2 million. Admiral supplied the US military with electronic equipment during World War II, and was one of the major television producers in the early era of the medium. In 1950, for example, Admiral sold seven TV sets, with four models having a 12.5 cm tube size (between $ 179.95 and $ 379.95, equivalent to $ 1,830 to $ 4,068 today), 16 inches (41 cm )) models at $ 299.95 ($ 3,051), and two 19 in (48 cm) models (at $ 495 and $ 695, equivalent to $ 5,035 and $ 7,069). The success in television sales enabled the company to branch off into major appliances such as refrigerators in the 1950s.
During World War II, Admiral was the weekly sponsor of the CBS Radio Network Sunday news program, World News Today , and Admiral used the "America's Smart Set" promotion slogan. Admiral is also one of the first major advertisers on television, sponsoring Sid Caesar's
During the Cold War, Admiral produced military TV cameras for reconnaissance purposes under terrible conditions on land, in the air and under water.
In 1962, Admiral Corporation listed four factories in Illinois. It was identified as a subsidiary of Admiral International Corp. in which Norman E. Johnson was appointed president. The Chicago headquarters is located at 3800 West Cortland street and identifies Ross D. Siragusa as Chairman and President, Cy S. Rossate Vice President in charge of production and William L. Dunn Vice President of engineering and declares a workforce of 2,100 employees. This factory is listed as its product line; television set & amp; combinations, radios, recorder changers, refrigerators, ranges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and stereophonic phonographs. The second Chicago facility is located at 4150 North Knox avenue which has a workforce of 230 employees that makes record converters, power supplies and metal stamps. In Galesburg, Illinois, Midwest Manufacturing Corporation is listed as a subsidiary of Admiral Corp. with George Heidenblut as Vice President of engineering and workforce of 1,400 employees who make refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, demers and ranges. The Harvard, Illinois plant located on the Southern Division road lists Ernest Polichio as plant manager and 2,000 employees make television sets. The Admiral labor force in Illinois numbered 5,730 employees in 1962.
Various divisions were sold to other companies in the mid-1970s, in part because of the import of consumer electronics dumped in the US market from Japan. Rockwell International acquired the company in 1973, selling an operating instrument for the Magic Chef, which was later sold to Maytag. In turn, Maytag was later acquired by Whirlpool.
The Admirals Milwaukee hockey team got its name from Admiral's equipment. In 1971, when the team was sold by its original owner to a group of investors, one investor, Edwin J. Merar, owns a hardware store. The team changed its name to "Admirals" after the Admiral fridge was sold at his shop.
In 1991, Maytag contracted Montgomery Ward & amp; Co. for the exclusive use of the Admiral brand on its consumer electronics items. Montgomery Ward then went bankrupt and closed all his stores. After Maytag's sale to Whirlpool, the brand became exclusive to The Home Depot. During the 1990s, the Admiral brand name was used on Zenith products.
The television business continues with AOC International. AOC (originally Admiral Overseas Corporation) is an international brand of LCD and HDTV display devices.
