Hair washing is a cosmetic act to keep your hair clean by washing with shampoo or other detergent and water products. Hair conditioner can also be used to improve the texture and the ability to manage hair. Two-in-one shampoos, which have detergent and conditioning components, are now commonly used instead of shampoo and conditioner.

To remove sebum from hair, some people use surfactants, mostly shampoo, but sometimes soap for their hair and moisturizing surfactants with water. The surfactants were rinsed with water along with the released dirt and the dust it binds.

There is also a dry shampoo, a powder that removes sebum from the hair by soaking it before it is combed out.

Most hairdressers, in countries like Canada, USA, and European and Latin American countries, offer hair washing as a service before or after haircut. This is usually done to make hair more manageable for hairdressers who will do hair cutting. After cutting hair, it can help remove loose strands of hair that might disturb the client. It's also a relaxed exercise, and many clients enjoy hair washing as their favorite piece of haircut. Hairdressers use a special wash basin to wash their hair, and this can be a forward or backward style.

In the backward (more common) version, clients sit in chairs, and lean their heads against the sink, with hairdressers standing behind them.

In the next version, the client leans forward over the sink, and the hairdresser stands over it to wash their hair. In some parts of the world, like China, it is not uncommon to see so-called 'upright' shampoo. In this style, the client just sits on the seat as usual, while the hairdresser uses the shampoo for their hair and adds water. They then gargle in the basin.
