src: cdn1.medicalnewstoday.com

Hematidrosis , also called blood sweat , is a very rare condition in which people sweat blood. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek haÃÆ'®ma/haÃÆ'matos (????/???????), which means blood, and h? Dr? S (?????), which means sweat.

Signs and symptoms

Blood usually comes out of the forehead, nails, umbilicus, and other skin surfaces. In addition, flowing from the mucocutaneous surface causes nosebleeds, bloody tears, and general representative menstruation. Episodes can be preceded by severe headaches and abdominal pain and usually heal on their own. In some conditions, the secreted fluid is more dilute and appears blood-colored, while others may have darker red secretions resembling blood.

While the level of blood loss is generally minimal, hematidrosis also causes the skin to become very soft and brittle.

Cause

Hematidrosis is a condition in which the capillary blood vessels that feed the rupture of the sweat glands, causing them to bleed, occur under conditions of extreme physical or emotional stress. Severe mental anxiety activates the sympathetic nervous system to trigger a Fight-or-flight stress response in such a way as to cause bleeding from the vessels that supply the sweat glands. It has been suggested that acute fear and extreme stress can cause hematidrosis.

Diagnosis

Investigations such as platelet count, platelet aggregation test, coagulation profile, and skin biopsy showed no abnormalities and direct light microscopy of fluid showed normal red blood cells. Investigations also fail to show the presence of vasculitis or skin supplements (ie sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles) are abnormal.

Treatment

The effects on the body are weak and mild to moderate dehydration due to severe anxiety and loss of blood and sweat.

This condition is very rare but there are reports in the medical literature of successful treatment with beta blockers (propranolol 10 mg) with a significant reduction in the frequency of spontaneous blood loss. The successful use of beta blockers supports the theory that this condition is caused by stress and anxiety but this etiology has not been established because the high prevalence of stress and anxiety in the modern era does not change the incidence of this very rare disease, suggesting that other co-abnormality also plays a key role in this disease. Atropine transdermal sulfate patch has also been successfully used.

Profitable results with psychiatric counseling to reduce stress highlight the relationship between psychogenic causes and hematohydrosis.

Instances

Dermatological research records the presence of hematidrosis in people awaiting execution. This has also been suggested as a possible explanation for the suffering of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:44) and for claims associated with stigmata.

Leonardo da Vinci described a soldier who was sweating blood before the battle. This phenomenon has also been observed in individuals convicted of executions, a case that occurred during the London blitz, and cases of fear of storms while sailing, etc.
