A design engineer is one who may be involved in various engineering disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, textile, aerospace, nuclear, manufacturing, systems, and structural/building/architecture. Design engineers tend to work on products and systems that involve adaptation and use complex scientific and mathematical techniques. The emphasis is on utilizing the techniques of physics and science to develop solutions for society.
Design engineers typically work with teams of engineers and other designers to develop conceptual and detailed designs that ensure the product is fully functional, performing and in line with its objectives. They can work with industry designers and marketers to develop product concepts and specifications to meet customer needs and can drive design efforts. In many areas of engineering, distinctions are made between design engineers and planner engineers in design; an important analysis for engineer planning while synthesis is more important for design engineers.
When design involves public safety, design engineers are usually required to be licensed, for example, a professional engineer in the US and Canada. There are usually "industry exceptions" for design engineers working on internal projects for companies and not providing professional services directly to the public.

Design engineers can work in teams along with other designers to create the images needed to create prototypes and production, or in the case of buildings, for construction. However, with the advent of CAD and solid modeling software, design engineers can create their own images, or perhaps with the help of many enterprise service providers.
The next responsibility of many design engineers is the prototype. The product model is created and reviewed. Prototypes are functional or non-functional. Functional "alpha" prototypes are used for testing; Non-functional prototypes are used to check the shape and fit. The virtual prototype and hence for such software solutions can also be used. This stage is where design flaws are discovered and repaired, and tools, factory equipment, and packaging are developed.
After the "alpha" prototype is completed after many iterations, the next step is the pre-production prototype "beta". The design engineer, who works with industrial engineers, manufacturing engineers, and qualified engineers, reviews a range of components and preliminary assemblies for design compliance and fabrication/method-making analysis. This is often determined through statistical process control. Variations in the product correlate with aspects of the process and are eliminated. The most commonly used metric is the process capability index C pk . C pk of 1.0 is considered the basic acceptance for full production.
The design engineer may follow the product and make any requested changes and corrections throughout the life of the product. This is called "cradle to grave" engineering. Design engineers work closely with manufacturing engineers throughout the product lifecycle.
The design process is intensive information, and design engineers have found spending 56% of their time involved in a variety of information behaviors, including 14% of actively seeking information. In addition to the design engineers' technical competence, research has shown the critical nature of their personal attributes, project management skills, and cognitive ability to succeed in roles.
Among other more detailed findings, a recent work sampling study found that design engineers spent 62.92% of their time engaged in technical work, 40.37% in social work, and 49.66% in computer-based work. There is much overlap between these different types of work, with engineers spending 24.96% of their time engaged in technical and social work, 37.97% in technical and non-social, 15.42% in non-technical and social, and 21.66% in non-technical and non-social.
