Automotive garages and workshops can be divided into the following categories:
- Car parts save or motor factors that also maintain service operations. This is not common in the UK but is more common in the US.
- Car repair shops owned and operated independently. It also includes regional and national chains and franchises including OEM car dealer sites. In the United States, these sites are generally certified by their respective manufacturers to make warranty and recall the repair by the manufacturer or distributor. Independent auto repair shops in the US can also be certified through manufacturer-sponsored programs. In the European Union, the recent law (The EC Block Exemption Regulation 1400/2002 (October 2003)) allows motorists more flexibility in choosing where they can get their car service. Because of this law, maintenance and service work should not be done by the primary dealer during the garage using 'Original Equipment Quality Matching' parts, and noted so, and the garage follows the manufacturer's service schedule. The Blocks Exemption Regulation (BER) covers service and maintenance during the warranty period and prohibits vehicle manufacturer's warranties from including conditions requiring normal maintenance to be provided within the vehicle manufacturer's network or that all parts used must be manufacturer's original parts. This means that motorists benefit from open market competition in aftermarket parts, repairs and services thereby reducing service costs through better labor rates and competitive spare parts. Also, some car repair shops provide additional towning services.
- Special car workshops are shops specializing in certain parts such as brakes, exhaust and exhaust systems, transmission, spare parts, car electrification, automotive air conditioning repairs, automotive glass repairs and installation, and wheel alignment or they which only works in certain vehicle or vehicle brands from certain continents in the world. There are also automotive repair shops specializing in vehicle modifications and adjustments. Often, special car workshops will have a variety of infrastructure and facilities (for jobs or special vehicles), as well as technicians and mechanics with different qualifications.
- The online vehicle repair shop (mobile mechanics) provides door repair and home delivery services for new and used car parts from different end models and classic cars whose spare parts are not widely available on the market.
- In countries such as the UK, the mobile auto body repair sector has experienced high growth by means of Cellular Repair SMART companies that provide car body repair services, such as Bumper Repair, car body repair, paintless dent repair, and paint damage repair for private and commercial consumers, usually within an industrial framework to repair vehicle damage locally, where the damage area is repaired does not exceed a piece of A4 paper.
