A strength and conditioning coach is a fitness and physical performance professional who uses special, but unlimited, prescription recipes to improve competitive athlete performance. Power and conditioning coaches have the option of specializing in specific sports teams, performance types, training types, training philosophy, or work at the college level, where they are assigned to sports. An overview and task of strength and conditioning coaches is to develop a prescribing exercise plan that modulates aerobic exercise, endurance, and/or flexibility to meet the metabolic and physical demands of the sport. With aerobic exercise prescription, strength and conditioning coaches determine the type, duration, and frequency of each exercise. For prescription endurance training, type of exercise, total session volume, rest time, frequency, and intensity are determined. They may also be involved in prescribing stretching routines or other approaches. Nutrition and medical consultations are not within the scope of their practice and qualification of training.

Effectiveness

Implementation of effective strengthening and conditioning programs has led to increased speed and strength. Research has shown that not only does training improve performance but incorrect training (long distance running, slow-twitch muscle activity, in soccer athletes with quick twitch characteristics) can lead to a decrease in performance. Using techniques such as plyometrics in some high-power athletes and special movements in sports on the other, strength trainers can improve physical function and athletic performance.

Criticism

Critics have followed the increased use of strength and conditioning coaches in various sports because the shift is important for the size and speed of the players. In rugby union, a game with heavy physical contact and minimal protection, players are described as "too big", creating collisions that increase the risk of short and long term injuries. Further, it has been suggested that increasing the weight and speed of the player and increasing the impact force leads to more frequent and severe concussions.

However, no studies have suggested increased use of strength and conditioning leading to increased risk of injury.
