History
Beginning
Sanyo was founded when Toshio Iue ( ??? , Ie Toshio , 1902-1969) , brother-in-law Konosuke Matsushita and also a former employee of Matsushita, borrowed an unused Matsushita factory in 1947 and used it to make bicycle generator lights. Sanyo was founded in 1949; in 1952 it made the first plastics radio in Japan and in 1954 the first Japanese type of pulsator washing machine. The company name means three oceans in Japanese, referring to the founder's ambition to sell their products worldwide, across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.
This ambition was realized in the late 1970s, when Sanyo introduced car stereos and home electronics to the North American consumer market and started a heavy television advertising campaign. Sanyo expanded their North American presence by purchasing the Whirlpool Corporation television business, Warwick Electronics, which produces television for Sears.
In 1982, Sanyo began selling MBC-1000 series CP/M computers. In 1983, IBM introduced the MBC-550 PC, the cheapest PC personal computer available at the time, but the lack of full compatibility pushed Sanyo out of the market and did not exist advanced models released.
Technically Sanyo has had a good relationship with Sony, supporting Betamax video formats from discovery until the mid-1980s (the best-selling UK video recorder in 1983 was Sanyo VTC5000), while producing the VHS video format at the same time for the Fisher Brand during the early 1980s -an, and later became the earliest user of the highly successful Video Camcorder Video8 format. Recently, Sanyo decided not to support Sony's format, Blu-ray Disc, and even provide support for Toshiba's HD DVD. This is ultimately unsuccessful, as the Sony Blu-ray wins.
In North America, Sanyo manufactures specialized CDMA cell phones for the Sprint Sprint PCS brand in the United States, and for Bell Mobility in Canada.

The latest product innovations in this area include the NiMH Eneloop Low self-discharge batteries, the Nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH), which, unlike typical NiMH cells, can be used from non-cycle packets recharging and maintaining a significantly longer charge than the battery using a standard NiMH battery design. The Eneloop line competes with similar products such as Rayovac's "Hybrid Rechargeable" line.
