Assad signed with WWE in 2005 and assigned to Deep South Wrestling (DSW), one of the areas of company development.
Once promoted to SmackDown! brand, Assad made his WWE wrestling debut in October 2006. In May 2007, he won the United States Championship, giving him his first title reign with the company. Professional wrestling career
Initial career (2002-2005)
Assad entered the professional wrestling business through the help of a prison correcting officer who also worked as a wrestler on an independent circuit. After being trained by former professional wrestler Soulman Alex G and Norman Smiley, Assad made his wrestling debut in 2002. He worked for many different companies on an independent circuit using the name of Antonio Banks, including appearances with Full Impact Pro (FIP) and Future of Wrestling FOW), where he won the last Tag Tag Championship with Punisher. During his time at the FIP, he wrestled with World Heavy Kill Heavy at the Ring of Honor Do/Die IV on February 19, 2005 but did not win the title. He also made a sporadic appearance for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), and wrestled on April 20, 2003, episode of TNA Xplosion. He reappeared for TNA on August 6, 2004, episode Impact! , with Sal Rinauro as his tag team partner, losing to America's Most Wanted. He also wrestled for Coastal Championship Wrestling (CCW) and Elite Wrestling Entertainment in 2005, competing against wrestlers such as Jerry Lynn and D'Lo Brown. At CCW, he won the Heavyweight Championship on August 20, 2005, beating Blackhart and Bruno Sassi in a three-way match.
World Wrestling Entertainment
Wrestling the Far South (2005-2006)
In 2005, after a number of direct events and dark games, Assad signed a development contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and was assigned to their development area Deep South Wrestling. He initially wrestled under the name of his "Antonio Banks" ring, but later developed the Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) in-ring persona: an arrogant athlete, self-obsessed partly inspired by wide fictional NFL receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) from the 1996 film Jerry Maguire and the real-life recipient of Terrell Owens. He was also on the SmackDown episode on January 13, 2005 being one of the police officers in the ring with Kurt Angle.
As an MVP, he made his first appearance at WWE television on the episode 4 August 2006 SmackDown! , in which the announcers describe it as the coveted free agent. The initial angle involves MVP appearing behind the stage and in the crowd arena, often flanked by women and/or bodyguards, and talking to SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long about his agent contract (which is not visible) should be aggressively negotiating. Throughout his segment, commentators described the MVP as arrogant, noting that he would stop the conversation in the middle to answer his cell phone or admire his own jewelry while people spoke to him. Finally, on September 26, 2006, a video of a press conference announcing the signing of MVP to "the biggest contract in SmackDown history!" Uploaded to WWE.com. view
MVP made its in-ring debut at No Mercy as a villain with a ring entrance featuring an NFL-like inflatable tunnel, before defeating Marty Garner. During the game, commentator Michael Cole and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) denounced the opponent's choice, since it has implied that it would be someone "more competent", and joined fans ridiculing his athletic suit style ring suit, calling him "sad" shouting Power Ranger . In the following week SmackDown! , MVP makes a request for a tougher opponent to prove his courage, which Kane answered made her SmackDown! debut. The two fought for the next two months, with MVP scoring a narrow victory over Kane in Street Fight, Steel Cage and Tim Tag matching with Mr. Kennedy against the re-unified Brotherhood, before losing to Kane in Inferno's match at Armageddon, from which he suffered a storyline 1 degree burns. Because of his burns "out of action" for a short time, in which JBL color commentator expressed anger with the fans to cheer the match where the only way to achieve victory is to set the opponent on fire.
Champion of the United States (2007-2009)
When Kane's feud subsided, the MVP started hostility with US WWE Champion Chris Benoit on the Benoit title. During the buildup for title matches with Benoit, MVP appears in SmackDown! introducing various alleged champions from around the world, defeating them in a squash match. MVP lost to Benoit in WrestleMania 23 and at Backlash, but eventually beat Benoit in two of the three falls on Judgment Day, with MVP taking on the US Championship, his first WWE title, in two straight falls. MVP credits timed work with Benoit to improve his in-ring skills.
His first big fight as champion was against Matt Hardy, who he started claiming to be better than anything else, after defeating him at Great American Bash. When MVP was legitimately diagnosed with the heart condition of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, it was written into the plot, with MVP blaming the condition for losing a panco game against Hardy. When MVP was given a segment of interviews during SmackDown! , VIP Lounge , it was used to back off a boxing match scheduled on the Main Event Saturday night - with Evander Holyfield replacing it, and finally punching MVP during the fight. On episode 24 August 2007 SmackDown! MVP boasted to General Manager Theodore Long that he was very good, he could win the WWE Tag Team Championship with anyone, prompting Long to give him a Championship match with the next person entering the room, which turned out to be Matt Hardy. The following week, MVP and Hardy took the championship from Deuce 'n Domino, making the MVP a double champion. The MVP and Hardy relationships have made them compete with each other in various ways, while the MVP proclaims itself as the "Captain" of the team and refuses to defend the US Championship. In the coming months, MVP starts hanging out better with Hardy and helping her defeat Finlay in SmackDown! .
Their reign ended together on November 16, 2007 on SmackDown episodes after Hardy demanded a shot at the United States Championship, but the MVP refused, and announced they had a Tag Team Championship defense against John Morrison and The Miz. They lost the match, and soon after that, the MVP requested a rematch clause, but they lost the match as well. MVP then attacks Hardy, targeting his knee, which in the storyline has been injured during the game, and made him "out of action". Hardy suffered a broken appendix when he was out of television, postponing their feud. While Hardy recovers, MVP is involved in a brief feud with Rey Mysterio and Ric Flair. She participated in the Money Ladder match at the Bank at WrestleMania XXIV, and during the game, Hardy made a unannounced return and tapped the MVP from the ladder with his signature Twist of Fate maneuver, rekindling their animosity. In Backlash in 2008, MVP downgraded the title to Hardy, ending his 343-day record, which was then the longest of the WWE era, and the third longest in the entire championship history (this record has since been broken by Dean Ambrose in 2014).
Beginning on August 29, 2008 episode SmackDown , MVP developed a five-month losing streak, losing a single team match and tag. At Unforgiven, he challenged for the WWE Championship in the Scramble Championship match, but to no avail. The disadvantage means that, in the storyline, the MVP does not receive a "bonus incentive contract", and is also no longer allowed to enter as usual with an NFL inflatable tunnel. During this successive defeat he has a brief feud with The Great Khali. On the January 16, 2009 episode of SmackDown, MVP finally broke its losing streak by beating Big Show in the Last Man Standing game with help from Triple H, as he struggled to ensure that Triple H would be allowed to compete in matches Royal Rumble, in the process of turning it into a fan favorite. On the recording of SmackDown on March 17, he won the US Championship for the second time by defeating Shelton Benjamin. At WrestleMania XXV, MVP competed in the Money ladder match at the Bank for the second year in a row, but failed to win.
Brand switch (2009-2010)
On April 13th, 2009, MVP was designed as the first overall pick for the Raw brand as part of the 2009 WWE draft. As a result of becoming the WWE champion of the United States, he shifted the title to Raw for the first time in history. He lost the title to Kofi Kingston on the June 1st episode of Raw . He then formed a tag team with Mark Henry, and they challenged Jeri-Show (Chris Jericho and The Big Show) to Unified WWE Tag Team Championship on a pay-per-view Breaking Point, but they failed to win the championship.
After starting a feud with The Miz, MVP confronted him for the US WWE Championship at Royal Rumble on January 31, 2010, but could not win. After retention of this initial title, both of them also participated in Rumble itself. MVP entered 14 and was attacked by Miz (who has not become an official participant) who beat him with a US champion belt. MVP then recovers and enters the game (not yet eliminated) to double-eliminate both himself and Miz. MVP challenged The Miz for the title for the second time on Feb. 21 Elimination Chamber pay-per-view but again can not win. He also competed in the Money ladder match at the Bank in WrestleMania XXVI, but could not win.
As part of the WWE 2010 draft supplement, MVP was redesigned to the SmackDown brand. She made her SmackDown on April 30th episode, interrupted CM Punk's promo, and then teamed up with Rey Mysterio to defeat Punk and Luke Gallows. On June 1st, the MVP was announced as Percy Watson's mentor for the second season of WWE NXT ; Watson was knocked out of the competition on 17 August, finishing fifth overall. On November 5th episode of SmackDown, MVP fought in Triple Threat Match for the number one contestation of Dolph Ziggler's Intercontinental Championship against Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre. The match was won by MVP, and the championship game was set for SmackDown the following week, but the MVP did not succeed in winning the title. MVP was announced as part of Team Mysterio, teaming up with Rey Mysterio, The Big Show, Chris Masters and Kofi Kingston to pick up Team Del Rio (Alberto Del Rio, Tyler Reks, Jack Swagger, Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes) in the Survivor Series. On pay-per-view, MVP was the first to be eliminated in a match by McIntyre, assisted by Del Rio holding MVP foot so he could not kick it out. The MVP team was able to win the match with Rey Mysterio and the Big Show being the only survivor. The final MVP match with WWE that aired on December 3rd, teamed up with Kaval in a losing bid against Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler; afterward, he and Kaval were attacked by Kane. MVP was later released from its WWE contract.

In 2011, Assad signed a one-year contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling, pursuing his famous passion for puroresu.
