Histori

Founded in 1946 by Walter Paepcke, The Aspen Skiing Company operates the Aspen/Snowmass resort complex, which consists of four ski areas: Aspen Mountains, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. The history of the company has in many ways paralleled, reflected, biased villagers of former silver towns. Born from the imagination of a veteran cadre of World War II, they hope to create a ski paradise located deep in the interior of Colorado.

Paepcke, a successful Chicago industrialist, founded the company as part of a larger effort to transform Aspen, a forgotten silver mining town, the center for the advancement of mind, body and spirit. As part of a larger effort, Paepcke also established other cultural institutions such as Aspen Institute and Aspen Music Festival. Aspen Skiing Company set up the Aspen Mountain ski resort in Aspen Mountain over the city of Aspen, Colorado. The first chair lift, Lift-1, opened on December 14, 1946, and was the world's longest hanging chair at the time. In 1950, the company hosted the FIS World Alpine Championships, the first international skiing competition in the United States. In the following decades, the company opened Buttermilk in 1958 and Snowmass (originally Snowmass-at-Aspen Ski Area) in 1967. In 1993 the company assumed ownership and operation of Aspen Highlands, founded in 1958 by Colorado Ski Hall Famer: Whip Jones. Previously, Jones successfully sued Aspen Skiing before the Supreme Court for antitrust violations at Aspen Skiing v. Aspen Highlands Skiing Corp.

The company did not pay dividends until it was purchased by Twentieth Century Fox, which when ticket prices began to rise. In the 1970s, ticket prices were more than 10 dollars a day; now, they more reflect the industry average.

In addition to managing and operating four ski areas, the company operates and owns hotels including The Little Nell and The Limelight, both in Aspen. The company also operates restaurants on the mountain and outside the mountain and operates ski and snowboard schools, Ski School and Snowboard in Aspen/Snowmass. Schools provide group and private lessons on all four mountains and teach all levels of students from beginner to expert. The director of the ski school manager is Jonathan Ballou who was appointed in the spring of 2017, replacing Katie Ertl. The ski season usually runs from Thanksgiving Day through mid-April, depending on weather conditions and snow.

Aspen Skiing Company is currently owned by the Crown family in Chicago. The Crowns also has significant holdings in General Dynamics and Wall Street JP Morgan Chase. The president and CEO of the company is Mike Kaplan, who replaces Pat O'Donnell.

Lobby

The Aspen Skiing Company is supported in the Water Rights Protection Act. The bill would prevent federal agencies from requiring certain entities to release their water rights to the United States to use public land. In 2012, a court ruled "support the skiing companies... that confiscate the rights of water that are confiscated by the state water trust." However, the US Forest Service decided to pursue "new regulations to demand that water rights be transferred to the federal government as a condition for obtaining the necessary permits to operate 121 ski resorts that cross federal lands." The Colorado ski industry supports the Water Rights Protection Act because it believes that the law is "necessary to block water-blackmail schemes by the Forest Service to withhold government permits unless companies release their precious water rights." Aspen Ski Vice President David Corbin testified to the Home Resource Subcommittee on Water and Electric that the company will be out of business without water.
