The Opel Omega is an executive car engineered and manufactured by German carmaker Opel between 1986 and 2003. The first generation, Omega A (1986-1993), replaces Opel Rekord, was chosen as the European Car of the Year for 1987, and available as a saloon or estate. The second generation, Omega B, was produced from 1993 to 2003.
Rejuvenated variations of Omega are marketed worldwide, including in North America as Cadillac Catera, in the United Kingdom as Vauxhall Omega and South America as Omega Chevrolet. The reengineering version was manufactured in Australia since 1997 as Holden Commodore (and its derivatives) since 1999, which in turn is exported to South America as Chevrolet Omega and the Middle East as Chevrolet Lumina.
Omega production was discontinued in 2003, without direct replacement, regardless of the Australian reengineering version carried out until 2006 as a sedan and 2007 in other guises. After emptying the executive car segment, Opel tried to fill the market vacuum with the "expensive" version of the Vectra and Signum range that existed at the time. Opel and Vauxhall re-entered the market segment in 2008 with Insignia and VXR8, with the latter being sold exclusively in the UK.

Development
The original Omega began production in September 1986, in lieu of the latest version of Opel Record, which has been produced since 1978. Sales began in November. The body is designed as an evolution of the previous Opel design theme that is designed more towards aerodynamics given higher fuel prices and a general boost towards more fuel efficiency. The result is a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.28 (0.32 for the Caravan). The entire development program cost two billion Deutschmarks. The UK market version of the last generation of Rekord has been marketed as Vauxhall Carlton, and the nameplate is maintained for new cars.
Late in 1986, he was selected as the European Car of the Year for 1987, in front of well-known versions of the Audi 80 and BMW 7 Series. Compared to Rekord, Omega displays a lot of modern technological advances, new to Opel in general, if not on the segment of the volume of the European automotive market.
These include electronic engine management, ABS, on board computers (featuring parameters such as fast fuel consumption or average speed), air-conditioned glove compartments and even fashionable LCD instrument clusters (available on CD versions from 1987 but down in 1991). More importantly, Omega comes with a self-diagnosis system (which is now a standard feature in today's cars), whose results can be read by a properly equipped authorized service station.
The Omega A platform was also modified to form the basis of Australia's second generation Holden Commodore until 1997, starting with the 1988 VN series.
Machine
All Omega models use longitudinal mounted engines with rear-wheel drive settings, with a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine range consists of 1.8 L, 2.0 L and 2.4 L four-cylinder units (as well as 2.0 L, 2.3 L diesel, and 2.3 L turbodiesel) to 2.6 L, 3.0 L, and 3.0 Unit L-24v six-cylinder. The four-cylinder 1.8 L and 2.0 L petrol engines are all based on the Family II design, while six cylinder and 2.4 L four-cylinder units are based on older Opel CIH (cam in head) families.
In Brazil, the car was sold as a Chevrolet Omega and powered by an L1G4 (I20E and C20YE) or 3.0LL6 (C30NE) engine until 1994. Since the discontinuation of Omega A in Germany, General Motors do Brasil required a new engine to continue production and 2.0 L 1 I4 is replaced by a 2.2 L I4 (C22NE) engine (116 PS (85 kW; 114 hp), 197? Nm (145 lb? Ft)), and 3.0 L I6 replaced by 4.1Ã,Ã L (250ci) Chevrolet Straight- 6 engine C41GE (168Ã, PS (124Ã, kW; 166Ã, hp), 285Ã, N? M (210Ã, lb? Ft)), tuned by Lotus and equipped with multi-port fuel injection. Chevrolet Omega was produced until 1998.
Special special trim levels and special variants
The four basic trim levels are LS, GL, GLS and CD (from the cheapest to the most expensive). LS basis is clearly intended for the fleet market, with sedans not available to individual customers in some markets. LS Caravan is also available as a van panel with rear closed side windows, with body color foil instead of being replaced with solid panels.
For the year 1991, Omega A was given a facelift, which included slight changes to the front and rear fascia, as well as additional interior and silencer material. Until then the basic 1.8 L engine was dropped. LS and GLS trim levels also decreased, while the CDs joined the Club and the Diamant CD.
Omega Diamant
This option package was introduced in 1988, and can be added to the GLS, LS and CD trim versions. These include alloy wheels, metallic paint, dark windows, stereo with cassette player, various leather trims in the interior, as well as painted grille and door mirrors. It is sold well and the package is stored after a facelift and a similar system with the same name is used for Omega B.
Omega 3000
Omega 3000 is a sports version of the Omega A model range. It features a straight-6, 3.0 liter, twelve valve engine, which produces 177 bpd (132 kW; 179 PS). Other modifications of the base model include lower suspension and limited slip differential, as well as different fascia and rear spoiler. The car has a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph), and accelerated from 0-100 km/h in 8.8 seconds.
In 1989, Omega 3000 was upgraded. The engine now has 24 valves, two camshafts overhead, and a variable intake manifold (Opel Dual Ram system). It also uses a more sophisticated engine control unit. Power increased to 204 bhp (152 kW, 207 PS), which increased the top speed to 240 km/h (149 mph), and 0-100 km/h down to 7.6 seconds. In countries where cars are sold as Vauxhall, Omega 3000 is called Carlton GSi 3000.
Omega Evolution 500
This is a limited model series produced in conjunction with Irmscher. It was built so that Opel can compete in DTM. The car has a straight 6-liter 6 producing 230 bhp (172 kW, 233 PS). The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 249 km/h (155 mph).
The racing version used on the track has 380 bhp (283 kW; 385 PS), accelerated to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 5 seconds, and can reach nearly 300 km/h (186 mph). However, it did not achieve great success.
Lotus Omega
In 1989, Opel approved a high performance version of Omega that was built in collaboration with Lotus. This version is named Lotus Omega or Lotus Carlton depending on whether the base car is sold as Opel Omega or Vauxhall Carlton in the European market respectively. Cars are built using various parts from other GM suppliers and manufacturers. The machine is based on the standard 24 liter 24 Opel valve, which is left to Lotus for modification.
As a result, engine capacity increased to 3.6 liters; In addition, two Garrett T25 turbochargers are installed together with water-cooled intercoolers. The engine management was also modified and the ignition key changed to the Delco AC type (the same system as used by Lotus Esprit). The result is a high-performance machine 377 bhp (281 kW; 382 PS).
The Omega also inherits a larger difference from Holden's Commodore with 45% LSD, while the gearbox is a six-speed manual ZF gearbox fitted to the Corvette ZR1. The tires are specially made by Goodyear, and can be identified by the Greek lowercase letters? (Omega) on the side. This is necessary because this car can reach 280 to 300 km/h (186 mph), which makes this Omega as the fastest sedan in the world at that time.
It is a controversial fact that another major German manufacturer producing high performance automobiles is the perfect speed limiting to not allow maximum speeds higher than 250 km/h (155 mph). The 1,663 kg (3.666 à £ lb) car accelerated from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds, 0-160 km/h (99 mph) in 11.5 seconds.

The 1994 Omega B is an all new car with a modern exterior design, but a traditional rear-wheel drive chassis. All new engine ranges. The MV6 model was reforested and sold in the United States as Cadillac Catera between 1997 and 2001. The Omega B platform was also modified to form the basis of Australia's third generation Holden Commodore through 2006, starting with the 1997 VT series.

The leaked images of the studio design mockup, which featured the Opel badge and the "D" plate, appeared in Europe in February 1990. The media at the time described a new saloon like a coupÃÆ'à © as, speculating a release in 1992 or 1993. While that, the Aurora Cadillac presented by General Motors at the 1990 Chicago Auto Show in February, is a concept car that has a close resemblance to the ultimate design style of Omega B.

At the end of 1999, Omega received a facelift and a 2.2 L 16 valve engine was added to the range as a final replacement for 2.0à ©, L.
The next year, the 3.2 V6 V engine replaces the 3.0 V6 unit, and the 2.6 liter V6 engine replaces the 2.5 V6 unit. The year 2001 brought also a new 2.5 DTI diesel engine from BMW, with a "Common Rail" system.

Omega V8 (prototype)
Opel aims to compete with the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, deciding to put the V8 engine into what was at the time, the flagship model of Opel Omega. There is a prototype version of the sedan and station wagon (equipped with multimedia system, and named V8.com).
Omega V8.com
The V8.com concept car project is intended to be a "mobile office" built on an Omega station wagon that extends 130mm, to provide more space for passengers and additional equipment; contains a separate 9.5-inch LCD screen for all passengers, internet access and an integrated mobile video conferencing system with a separate camera and microphone that provides hands-free operation by the passengers. In addition the car is equipped with Xenon headlamps, and Advanced Frontlighting System (AFS), which can automatically be adjusted to road conditions.
Hence the name was empowered by GM LS1 V8 engine.
The car debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999.
Omega V8
Opel plans to upgrade its flagship Omega model with the powerful GM LS1 V8 engine used in the Chevrolet Corvette. Unlike V8.com which is a concept car, this model is meant to go into serial production. Omega V8 is shown openly for the first time at the 70th Geneva Motor Show (2-12 March 2000). The V8 engine version will go on sale in the fall of 2000.
The reason for canceling the production plan is a concern about whether the machine is vollgasfest (Germany, "Full throttle resistant") engine may be too hot and damaged if expelled out on the Autobahn for long periods of time, although Holden equips Commodore- (which is an Omega reengineered for the Australian market) with the same engine. This platform version is used for Holden Monaro which is marketed in the United States as the fourth generation Pontiac GTO, and in the United Kingdom as Vauxhall Monaro.

Worldwide markets
- In the United Kingdom, Omega A is marketed as the second-generation Vauxhall Carlton (first generation Vauxhall Carlton that has been revamped Opel Record) E2, and Omega B generation as Vauxhall Omega. Between 2001 and 2007, Vauxhall sold Australia-made Monaro coupe, which originated from Holden Commodore, itself based on the Omega B platform.
- In Brazil, between 1991 and 1998, Omega A was built and marketed as a Chevrolet Omega or Omega Suprema sedan at the station wagon. Between 1999 and 2006, this Chevrolet is Omega B from Holden Commodore imported from Australia.
- In North America, a badly engineered version of Omega B and Omega B FL is marketed as Cadillac Catera. Between 2004 and 2006, Pontiac re-introduced and sold the GTO as a coupe based on Australian-made Monaro, which originated from Holden Commodore.
- In Australia, the re-engineering version of Opel Omega A was produced by Holden (GM's subsidiary) as a second generation Commodore and its derivatives (including long wheelbase, utility and luxury sedans, Statesman and Caprice) between 1988 and 1997 Between 1997 and 2006, Holden instead adapted Omega B for its third generation as the Commodore and derivate, which now also includes the Monaro coupe.
This Australian sedan is larger in all body dimensions having a less sophisticated suspension design, different interior styles and powertrains ranged from Buick derived 3.8 liter V6 between 1988 and 2004 or 5.0 liter V8 between 1988 and 1999 both produced by Holden, to a new 3.6 liter V6 from 2004 also built and exported by Holden and fully imported Chevrolet V8 engines, starting with a 5.7 liter version in 1999, upgraded to a 260 kW 6.0 liter version in 2006. This vehicle is the same -the same is available in New Zealand.
- Since 1999, the second generation Omega B Holden Commodore and its derivatives are exported to North America, Brazil and the UK in the form of sedans and coupes as mentioned above, but also as Chevrolet Lumina in the Middle East and South Africa. Derivat luxury wheelbase 1999 Holden Commodore long, WH-series Statesman/Caprice, also exported to Middle East as Holden Caprice fifth generation. In 2005, as WK Statesman, these vehicles were sold in China as Buick Royaum and in Korea as Negarawan Daewoo.
End of the Omega
In the United Kingdom, Vauxhall Omega proved to be a successful saloon despite being poured in many reviews for heavy depreciation and unreliable. Omegas is a regular sight on British roads, sports policemen and as a covert traffic surveillance vehicle. However, just four years after the introduction of its latest incarnation - Omega B2, and seventeen years since the introduction of Omega A, the production of this model ended without a replacement. On June 25, 2003, Omega last slid out of the factory in RÃÆ'üsselsheim - it was a silver 3.2 L V6 Omega B2, number 797,011.
Following the destruction of its direct rivals, Ford Scorpio and Rover 800, Opel/Vauxhall find themselves competing with the BMW 5 Series, with minimal sales success. Apart from the Australian-engineered Holden Commodore models that run until 2006 for sedans (trains and utilities through 2007), Omega production ended in 2003 without direct replacement. In Europe, the gap in the range is indirectly filled by the "more expensive" version of the existing Vectra and Signum.
Stories and photos of a "new" successor appeared in the automotive press one year later. However, in the case of Auto Express , his article in October 2004 featured only Holden Torana TT36 concept car, which also featured Holden Commodore 2006. However, Holden contributed in the surviving Omega badge with it, for the model entry level Commodore new. Unlike previous models since 1978, the new Holden is no longer based on the Omega platform.
In June 2018, there were only 16,283 Vauxhall Omegas remaining in England. 13,160 of them are still taxed, while 3,123 are in SORN.
