A janitor (American English, Scottish English), janitress (female), custodian , porter , cleaner or caretaker are people who clean and maintain buildings such as hospitals, schools, and residential accommodation. The main responsibility of the janitor is as a cleanser. In some cases, they will also perform maintenance and security tasks. A similar position, but usually with more managerial duties and excluding cleaning, is occupied by super officials in the United States (and sometimes in Canada). Cleaning is one of the most frequently outsourced services.

Office cleanup
Office cleaning staff do many of the same tasks as janitors. But the task is shared among different members. Additional tasks include:
- water the plants (trim as well)
- cleaning the sink, refrigerator, microwave and toaster in the office kitchen; cleaning recycling and waste bin
- cleaning furniture and computer equipment (monitor and table area, but not including keyboard) and table
Outsourcing
Cleaning is one of the most frequently outsourced services. Some reasons for this include:
- Basic cleaning tasks are standardized, with little variation among companies.
- The nature of the work and the required performance standards can be clearly defined and defined in the contract, unlike more technical or professional work that the specifications are difficult to develop.
- Some organizations prefer to divert jobs that are not related to their core business to save the additional salary and benefits needed to manage the work.
- Some organizations may feel uncomfortable dealing with low-wage employee-related employment relationships; with outsourcing, these employment problems are transferred to contractors whose staff feel comfortable and experienced in handling this issue, and their approach can capitalize on economies of scale.
- If a janitor is not available due to illness or leave, a contractor who employs many janitors can easily assign a replacement. A small organization that employs one or more direct cleaners will have more problems with this.
Demographics
Between 17% to 23% of the total immigrant population without documents living in the United States works in the cleaning industry (and grows at the rate of 1/2% to 1/3% per annum). In addition to this population that offers cheap labor sources, most cleaning work is done at night, making it an attractive option for janitorial companies to hire undocumented workers seeking underground work. Many such immigrants have even started their own hygiene companies using fictitious business licenses and false identity information.
In the Netherlands, the number of cleaning companies grew from 5,000 in 2003 to 8,000 in 2008.
