Coleman Company, Inc. , is an American company specializing in outdoor recreational products, especially camping equipment.
The company was founded by William Coffin Coleman, who began selling gasoline pressure lamps in 1900 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1902.
Coleman is currently owned by Newell Brands. In January 2005, Jarden acquired American Household, Inc., about $ 845 million. Corporations owned by Coleman Company, and Sunbeam Products, Inc. Brands acquired as part of this acquisition include Coleman, First Alert, Sunbeam, Mr. Coffee, and Oster. For the background, in March 1998, Sunbeam Corporation acquired The Coleman Company, Inc. and Coleman Powermate. In December 2002, Sunbeam Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and canceled common shares. When it emerged from bankruptcy, Sunbeam changed its name to American Household, Inc., a private company (www.jarden.com).
Coleman Company headquarters is in Wichita, and also has facilities in Texas. There are about 3,600 employees but most are not manufacturing jobs. The majority of their goods are now produced in China.
Throughout its history, Coleman has produced a wide range of equipment primarily intended for the camping and recreation market. Perhaps their most famous product is the Coleman Lantern, a series of lights that were originally made to burn gasoline. The current model uses Coleman fuel (white gas) or propane and uses one or two coats to produce intense white light.
Historians of the company claim that in 1905, the company provided a demonstration for the 1905 Cooper vs. football game. Fairmount (now called Sterling College and Wichita State University). The Coleman gas lamps are provided to play the first night soccer matches west of the Mississippi River.
In 1996, the company acquired the French Application des gaz/Campingaz.
In the past, the company also produced various domestic cooking stoves and irons. Today, Coleman also produces camp stoves (Coleman produces the original "G.I. Pocket Stove"), sleeping bags, coolers, hot tubs, generators, watches, sandals, tents, dog toys and backpacks. They also create small rows of boats, including canoes, pontoon boats, johnboats and unique scanoe. In the past they also sold travel trailers pop-ups, Skiroule snowmobiles and Hobie Cat sailboat brands. The company recently started producing a backyard barbecue grill, which is sold in Canadian Tire.
A separate company, Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning, sells space heaters and air conditioning units. Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning is owned by Johnson Controls, and uses the Coleman name and logo under license.
