Ayd Mill Road is a street in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It runs diagonally through Saint Paul, connects with Interstate 35E at the southeast end, and feeds it to Selby Avenue at its northwest end. Indirect access to I-94 is possible through Selby and Snelling Avenues. Originally known as the Short Pathway, its name was changed in 1987 to John Ayd, a German settler who ran a factory and residence in the area in the mid-19th century.

History

The foundation of the way back to the 1880s when Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad gained the right stream to lay the commuter rail. The "Short Line," as it is called, is one of the main interurban routes serving Saint Paul and the rural suburbs en route to Minneapolis at the turn of the 20th century. With the emergence of the TCRT tram system in the 1910s, the line was redundant and converted into heavy rail by CMSPP, although it still carries a passenger train between Saint Paul Union Depot and Milwaukee Road Depot in neighboring Minneapolis.

In the 1960s, the city of Saint Paul began to be built on Short Line Road, imagining the limited direct access in the lower classes between I-35E and I-94. However, local opposition in Merriam Park neighborhood, coupled with the I-35E development that was hampered by opposition from the Summit Hill neighborhood, made the vision a reality. Connections were made in the classroom with Selby Avenue, but connections with I-35E were never made, forcing southern tourists out on Jefferson Avenue when the road first opened in 1965.

Connection with I-35E and current usage

For much of his life, Ayd Mill Road is not striped, and very little traffic is seen there. In the summer of 1992, the Saint Paul public works department linked Ayd Mill Road to I-35E to help reduce traffic congestion during the completion of the interstate in the city center, after which the link was backed up.

In the late 1990s, the city again reviewed the prospects of the I-35E-to-I-94 relationship as part of environmental studies as one of the many options for public rights. Other options include replacing the entire stretch of road with the park. In the end, the city decided the best option is a rebuilt road that runs north along the railroad to St. Anthony Avenue, where connections to I-94 are possible. Although new environmental protests have blocked this step, the path has been blackened and striped, and the ramp I-35E reopens after the signal is mounted on the slope of the Ayd Mill entrance.

In February 2007, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman voiced his intention to make the I-94 relationship a reality.

The nearby Short Line line is still in use today, and Amtrak Empire Builder is now running on this rail. However, instead of running to Minneapolis, Empire Builder continues north and west toward Saint Cloud and the Pacific Northwest.
