Vertiv, formerly Emerson Network Power, says it "designs, builds and services critical infrastructure that enables vital applications for data centers, communication networks and commercial and industrial facilities".
Platinum Equity acquired the network power business from Emerson Electric in a transaction valued in excess of $4 billion, completed in December 2016. Emerson also retained a subordinated equity piece in the company.
Upon completion of the transaction, Rob Johnson was named chief executive officer of Vertiv. He was formerly an operating partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers and before that served in a leadership role for 10 years in the data center infrastructure industry.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Vertiv has more than 20,000 employees and more than 25 manufacturing and assembly facilities around the world. 2016 fiscal year sales were $4 billion The company has regional headquarters around the world in: Westminster, London, United Kingdom; Miami, Florida; Pasig, Manila, Philippines; Nanshan District, Shenzhen, China; and Mumbai, India.

Brands and Acquisition Timeline
Vertiv has four primary brands: Chloride, Liebert, NetSure and Trellis. Emerson Electric acquired these four brands over several decades as the Emerson Network Power business was built:
- 1985: Emerson acquires ASCO, which provides the power transfer switches critical to high-availability power systems.
- 1987: Emerson acquires Liebert Corporation, a pioneer in thermal management and power protection for information technology systems.
- 2000: Emerson acquires Ericsson Energy Systems, the part of Ericsson supplying Power and Climate solutions for the Telecom market and Emerson Energy Systems is created. It is then incorporated when Emerson forms the Network Power business to integrate its critical infrastructure technologies under one brand.
- 2001: Emerson Network Power increases its presence in Asia through the purchase of Avansys, China's leading network power provider, and by forming Emerson Network Power India.
- 2002: Emerson is outsourcing the Climate Solutions section with the TELECOOL SYSTEMS from Emerson Energy Systems and the private Company Climate Solutions Sweden is created.
- 2004: Emerson Network Power acquires the outside plant and power system business of Marconi, expanding its solutions for the telecommunications industry.
- 2006: Emerson Network Power acquires Germany-based Knürr AG, a leading provider of enclosure systems.
- 2007: Emerson Network Power introduces Energy Logic, a comprehensive 10-step process for reducing data center energy consumption.
- 2009: Emerson Network Power acquires Avocent, a leading provider of service processor management and data center management software and KVM solutions.
- 2010: Emerson Network Power introduces the NetSure DC UPS, the first integrated, row-based DC UPS designed for the data center market. In that year, it acquires Chloride, an innovative UPS manufacturer with a strong European presence and power solutions that can be customized for industrial applications.
- 2011: Emerson Network Power launches the Liebert DSE precision cooling unit with integrated economization, enhancing the ability of data centers to use free cooling.
- 2012: Emerson Network Power launches the Trellis platform, its real-time data center infrastructure management solution. In that year, also introduces the Smart Solutions family of modular, integrated infrastructure solutions.
- 2014: Emerson Network Power introduces the Liebert eXL, a high-efficiency large data center UPS with integrated communication and management capabilities. In that year, also helps Facebook support its rapid deployment data center (RDDC) technique through a fully modular approach to data center construction. Also partners with other leading technology manufacturers to create Redfish, an open, scalable specification for out-of-band server management.
- 2016: Vertiv launches as a standalone business.
- 2017: ASCO is sold to Schneider Electric.
